Designed to maintain the inclusivity already paramount in the Shelby Bottoms park, this 50ft bird observation tower is entirely ADA accessible, providing a thoughtful experience to all users. Without electricity on site, a mass counterweight allows the observation deck to scale the height of the tower with minimal effort. Because this amenity is so dependent on its context, I worked to ensure it was of its place. The structure and counterweight track of this tower is derived from the nearby train trestle that is rooted deeply in the history of the site. The louvers that form the facade dance in the same way the tall native grasses surrounding the tower move.
